TOP 11 Automatic Divers Watch of 2019: Magnificent Ten and One World Record

Despite the fact that automatic divers watch is now almost never used for their intended purpose, they remain a showcase of the technological achievements of watchmakers. Thereupon, the formal requirements for a diving watch are described by the international standard ISO 6425.

The main ones are to ensure the operability of the watch mechanism at a depth of at least 100 m and the presence of a time control device for diving, that is, a one-way rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale. The standard also sets requirements for testing such watches, but this is not the point at present.

Accordingly, the main thing is this: to ensure a high (300 m and more) level of water resistance, watch brands are forced to use design solutions in the production of diving models, which are usually not used for the main model range.

These include, in particular, the hardened case, the sealed connection of the dial glass with the bezel, the crown seals that do not allow water to enter the case.

Despite the seeming simplicity of these requirements, not all are able to fulfill them. Not surprisingly, the elite manufacturers of diving models with the highest declared water resistance is the most advanced. Thus, large watch companies (Rolex, Omega, Seiko) or manufacturers that have long specialized in diving equipment (like Panerai and Ulysse Nardin).

#1 Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional

Before moving on to the review, we note a very significant event for diving watches that happened in April this year. Omega has announced that its watch has broken the deep-sea diving world record set nearly 60 years ago.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional: AUTOMATIC DRIVER WATCHES

Must be remembered, the case of the record Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional has a diameter of 52 mm (which would do honor to a pocket watch) and a thickness of 28 mm. With this purpose in mind, this watch absolutely keeps out the possibility of wearing it on the wrist.

Researcher Viktor Veskovo and the Limiting Factor deep-sea vehicle

The Limiting Factor apparatus under the control of American researcher Viktor Veskovo sank into the Challenger Abyss of the Pacific Mariana Trench to a depth of 10,928 m, while two copies of the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional were attached to the manipulators of the bathyscaphe, and the third – to the Lander unmanned satellite.

Thus, the Five Deeps mission managed to slightly improve the 1960 record, when the Triest bathyscaphe with a Rolex Deepsea Special attached to it reached 10,912 m (according to other sources – 10,919 m).

No less famous was the expedition of filmmaker James Cameron, during which in 2012 he made a solo dive into the Challenger Abyss to a depth of 10,898 m. Certainly, a Rolex Deepsea Challenge watch was placed on the outer skin of his apparatus.

Built for Record Diving

It goes without saying that both the Omega and Rolex, built for record diving, have no more in common with the series production of these brands than the Formula 1 car does with public road vehicles.

In particular, Omega used the same titanium alloy for the case, bezel, case back, and even the crown, from which the case of the Limiting Factor bathyscaphe is made, and to attach the thick sapphire crystal to the bezel, the method of hot-forming an amorphous Liquidmetal alloy based on zirconium was used.

By all means, the experimental watches were equipped with fully serial automatic diver movements Caliber 8912 with a co-axial escapement and a METAS master chronometer certificate. Of course, these are used in the models of the Seamaster Proplof line – the most serious diving watches Omega with a water resistance level of 1200 m.

All in all, despite the uniqueness of the prototypes and, for sure, their astronomical value, the efforts of the Omega brand to explore the ultimate performance of mechanical watches deserve respect.

Moreover, now let’s take a look at the new items that watch manufacturers have offered this year to real divers and sympathizers. Thus, the models are arranged in ascending order of retail price.
